5 ways of visiting the Maldives in 2050

At the press conference of the COP27 Buzzfeed asked the delegate of the Maldives for their prediction of the country’s state in 2050. 2050 is the magical number of the year for which one of the biggest emitters, the EU, put itself the goal to reach net zero carbon dioxide emissions in order to still meet the Paris Agreement’s commitment to “holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial level and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial level” (Article 2a, Paris Agreement). Only in this way, the rise in the sea level can be stopped and thus the future existence of the Maldives and the lives of its 543,617 citizens can be saved. Otherwise, this heavenly holiday destination will disappear from our bucket lists…

Nonetheless, here are 5 ways how you could still visit the Maldives in 2050:

1.      A cruise. Doing a cruise will be one of the best ways of visiting the Maldives in the future. You can find everything you need on the ship and don’t even have to leave it - but well, in the case of the Maldives, this won’t be possible anymore anyhow. Though, you can still have a nice view on the water!

2.      Submarine. You have always been curious about what it is like to be in a submarine for a couple of days and want to live the typical life of a marine?! Why not book a trip on a submarine and experience the Maldives from underwater?

3.      Scuba diving. Attention diving fans! Pack your flippers in your suitcase and experience the (hopefully still) colorful underwater world of the Maldives while scuba diving and exploring the future Atlantis of the Indian Ocean.

4.      Another tropical island. If the above-mentioned options don’t suit you, you can still go to another tropical island like Seychelles since they all look quite similar anyhow. But oh, I forgot that then they probably won’t exist anymore too …

5.      Google Maps. Why travel far away when you can experience the Maldives also comfortably from home? ‘Cause Google Maps is here to help you. With Google Maps you can see the Maldives without even having to leave your bed - what a luxury! There is no difference between seeing the Maldives in real life or through your screen anyways, right?!

Have fun visiting the Maldives! 😉
