Editorial: NATO Opens Talks With Beijing

As the situation in Czechoslovakia is ever-more escalating, NATO has decided to send a unified diplomatic delegation to Beijing to discuss the People’s Republic of China’s perspective on the issue. The Western alliance also plans to open formal diplomatic relationships with the People’s Republic, a new NATO directive confirms. Additionally, it has decided to send diplomatic delegations to Bucharest and Belgrade as well, emphasising the decline of Soviet influence in Eastern Bloc countries. Although Radio Free Europe condemns the communist regime and its illegal rise to power in the Chinese mainland, NATO opening relations with them is a key component in the West's fight against Soviet communism. The West has to be careful though. Weakening the USSR cannot happen at the cost of strengthening Communist China.
