France’s ideas rejected by Russia
SECURITY COUNCIL, Nov 14th – Inevitably, during the making of resolutions in the SGMUN 2020 Security Council, new ideas are explored.
The French Republic has therefore suggested in an unmoderated caucus for the P5’s power to be reduced so that 2 vetos would be required for a resolution or decision to not be accepted.
The delegate of the French Republic very wishfully proposed the idea only for the Russian Federation to reject the suggestion right after it had been “put on the table”.
The Russian Federation, standing firmly by its position had emphasized that it will not support and changes that would diminish the power of its country in the security council.
To that, the French delegate responded with a sad “the idea was worth a try regardless”.
Although France had then moved away from Russia who had at that point still worked with China, Russia expressed curiosity for France’s other ideas to everyone’s surprise.
Questionably, Russia has then decided to work on a resolution with The French Republic and even with the United States.
The significance behind Russia’s decisions is still unclear, as Russia had always leaned towards China.
Russia, after asked to clarify had stated that the country is not open to any actions that would threaten its power at the P5 and stressed that the USA shares its opinion.
Whilst China understood Russia’s justification, the delegate of China emphasized that the country of China believes that a reform in which both developed and developing countries will be balanced in terms of power, is necessary.
Countries in the African Union had earlier that day praised China for its support on their inclusion in the UNSC during a press conference in the committee.
China believes that in order for the world to progress, the presence of African and Latin American countries is crucial, which is why it has engaged in the idea of having the number of security council members increased by 8, to a total of 23 seats.
China also stressed that for a security council reform, a reelection of the permanent five members would be necessary which has been also included in the draft resolution that is being worked on.
Although countries like Russia, France and the USA have ceased to show support for China’s ideas, China stands firmly by its ideas and their beliefs for a better world.
