Sputnik - Non-threatening And Truly Obsolete (NATO) in the UNSC
During the press conference questions were asked about NATO, but they seem to neglect the importance of the alliance.
The NATO members have decided to invoke article 5 of the Washington Treaty for the first time in history, the article reads:
“The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all”
This will be the first time NATO moves out of the Euro-Atlantic area and attempts to expand its capabilities. However, the North Atlantic Countries do not see an important role for NATO in the aftermath of 9/11. It seems like America will always come first and they do not recognize the importance of a collective security alliance. The United Kingdom and France stand behind the USA in NATO, but they do not seem to grasp the consequences of article 5.
Talking to the Taliban
The Russian Federation is essential to the flow of the debate and adds a valuable contribution. After some tensions in the committee, the Chinese delegation has retracted its threat to veto the resolution. However, the Russian Federation calls out the hypocrisy of other countries during the press conference. They stress that Pakistan does not seem to value the importance of the victims and care more about negotiating with the Taliban.
“Pakistan rather spends its time threatening nuclear strikes if any intervention is taken in Afghanistan”- Russia
Pakistan’s constructive solution is to talk with the Taliban representatives. But it seems that Pakistan only speaks in two tongues: negotiating with terrorists or nuclear threats.
Will the United Security Council negotiate with terrorists in the end?
