Interview with the Delegate of the Italian Republic during the session of the UNSC
Sputnik News: Brazil, Japan, USA, France, Russia and Germany have already agreed to leave the Security Council exclusive, thereby willing to accept only six new permanent states. How do you generally see the future of the Security Council of the UN?
Delegate: We imagine the future Security Council as a more representative organization, open to variety. Therefore, in our eyes, rather non-permanent seats shall be granted the membership in the SC.
Sputnik News: The coalition of states also emphasizes the importance of a generally better accessibility to the Security Council. In order to achieve this common goal, the delegate of the USA proposed to include more observer states in the Security Council and to conduct open meetings in the future. What is your position on these points?
Delegate: The solution with the observer states is not the concern in the Security Council - more states in general shall have the opportunity to really engage in the UN. As I mentioned earlier: Italy, Mexico and Ukraine prefer the flexible, diverse approach.
Sputnik News: Thank you for the statements. Which countries would Italy suggest as permanent members, given we would now decide on a reform resolution?
Delegate: Italy, Mexico and Ukraine would be better candidates for the permanent seats in the Security Council than Germany or Brazil. The first are leaning towards a dialog solution which, in my opinion, is a crucial approach in the modern circumstances.
