Where is the United States of America? The rise of the East
The USA is not present in the ECOSOC committee on talks about the post-pandemic scenario. The dynamic of the committee has changed due to the absence of the major powers except China and Japan, is this the new rise of the East?
The United States did not show up to the ECOSOC discussion on the topic of ‘promoting social protection and basic services to countries in the post-pandemic scenario‘. This begs the question if the USA does not recognize the severity of the current COVID pandemic.
China assumes that the United States is experiencing issues with the rise of COVID cases in many states, low vaccination rates and Biden’s low approval ratings. They presume that this had created discontent in the Biden administration and consequently, they decided not to attend. Moreover, China is offering to fund vaccines and medical supplies; however, it is doubtful that China is willing to commit to such a statement. With China and Japan funding all projects brought forward by the committee, is this the rise of the East?
With the USA and European countries being absent, the dynamic of the ECOSOC committee has shifted. Small states finally have a chance to make their voices heard, which they normally would not be able to. However, the big question remains: Where is the USA?
