Delegates’ Choice: The Favorite Meme Formats of SGMUN - Hanna Lauridsen

While many delegates are tired today and saving energy for the gala later, one thing that has not slowed down is the constant steady stream of memes. If somebody wants to know what is going on in a committee, the memes are not a bad place to look.

It also appears to be the favorite source of news for delegates. Interestingly, it seems that memes might even be more effective than journalism in influencing the debate. Leaving many hard-working IPC reports wondering whether their delegates even read their articles…?

So, with how serious everybody is about memes it is only natural that we at IPC also investigate the SGMUN meme culture.

It does not take much research to discover that each committee has its own culture. UNICEF stands out with the sheer amount of chair memes and its love for Guillermo. HNATO on the other hand for its willingness to use pictures from committee proceedings, such as the iconic Supreme Henke. It also appears some have taken a life of their own, mainly the Bulgarian Yoghurt saga that continues to baffle many delegates.

Still, there are also commonalities among them all. Common themes include; chairs begging for gossip box, delegates fighting, or delegate efforts being thwarted. Waiting memes are also popular, coming in a variety of formats.

Still, after some careful research, it appears that there are some clear favorites when it comes to meme formats among the delegates.

  1. Bernie Sanders, I am once again asking …
The single most used format, it has been used in pretty much all committees, popularly for chairs memes or desperate delegates

2. Spongebob memes
While this is not one single format, the sheer popularity of SpongeBob memes is quickly obvious when looking at across committees. Spongebob actually tied with Bernie for the most used format, however, we relegated them to second as it is not a single format.
There are no limits to the versatility of use of SpongeBob.

3. Running Away Balloon & Distracted Boyfriend

Tied in 3rd place we have these two classics. Distracted boyfriend, a favorite to express relationships between countries. Running away balloon is commonly used to sympathize with delegates whose goals are being thwarted by fellow delegates or even chairs.

4. Chill guy

He is just a chill guy, what else is there to say?

Other top contenders include “Women Yelling at Cat” & “Drake hotline bling”. To all the meme-makers, keep up the good work!

Please note that the meme production is constant and certainly not easy to keep up with, so this information might be slightly outdated by the time of publishing.
