West Germany to Give Free Money to East Germans Arriving in the Federal Republic

In the Federal Republic of Germany, there have been talks about the introduction of a „Begrüßungsgeld“ - free „welcome money“ given to East Germans arriving in the Federal Republic of Germany, a source close to the government told Radio Free Europe. The proposed amount is said to be an impressive DM 500. Each East German will have the right to claim this gift upon arrival. This is intended as a token of support from the government aiming to financially relieve individuals wishing to build a life in West Germany.
