Editorial Svobodas Call for Chaos

In a controversial move, President Ludvik Svoboda has urged the people of Czechoslovakia to resist Soviet authority, should it act to stabilize the ongoing unrest in Prague. His statement, calling for resistance against what he unlawfully termed the “oppressors of freedom,” has raised alarms among socialist allies, who see this as a dangerous incitement to division and disorder.

The Soviet Union, which has long supported Czechoslovakia’s development within the socialist bloc, emphasizes that its role is to protect the principles of socialism and ensure stability. Svoboda’s remarks, described by many as inflammatory, risk emboldening reactionary forces and weakening the unity of the Warsaw Pact.
