“The best migrant is the one who does not come.” MEP Sextro (Fidesz) establishes her narrative strongly during today’s debate. The MEP’s of the European Parliament started the debate off on the issue of migration and refugees. However, it seems like the European Parliament is unable to put its ideological differences aside to tackle this crisis. Will their migration policy fail like it did in 2015?

All states acknowledge the importance and relevance of this topic to the EU, especially since the ongoing migrant crisis on its borders. It is essential for the European Parliament to address this humanitarian crisis and coordinate its efforts. The discussion between the political groups is intense, but backroom talk is occurring behind closed doors.

Identity and Democracy takes on a strong position on border security. They are striving for a stronger and better Europe and they believe that the EU borders need to be protected. This sentiment is enforced by MEP Boje: 

“EU will not be blackmailed into taking refugees, we are steadfast ‘. 

The European People’s Party supports ‘European Border Security for European Borders’, they stand for strong and united external border security. The EPP wants to avoid a humanitarian crisis at all costs. However, they seem to be internally divided on migration and no clear narrative of the political group can be established. 

The Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats holds solidarity at the heart of their migration policy. They are critical of the current status of the debate and contents, but they firmly believe that their fraction can add valuable contributions to the debate.
